Veterans Day/ America Unit Week 1

This week we started our two-week Veterans Day/America unit!  We discussed that our country is the United States of America and we live in the state of Missouri.  We introduced information about the American Flag, including the colors being red, white, and blue, which is made up of red and white stripes (13 for the original 13 colonies and first American States) and 50 stars that represent the 50 states. We learned that the bald eagle is the national bird of the United States.  We also learned that a Veteran is someone who is serving or who served in the military made up of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force (which is the newest branch of the Armed Services.) We spoke of bravery and how veterans help protect us and keep us safe.  Veterans Day which is celebrated every year on November 11th was introduced as a special day to say "Thank You!" to those brave veterans who keep us safe and free.

Monday- We celebrated Rose's 5th Birthday . Rose brought blank jigsaw puzzles to decorate as a birthday treat for her classmates.  Each student created their own personalized puzzle. The puzzles were a huge hit. We also celebrated Rose's birthday with the GoNoodle birthday songs played for each student's birthday, and she was given the choice to choose a couple more movement activities.  We talked about Election Day taking place on Nov. 4, the day they would not have school, and the importance of everyone to getting an opportunity to vote. We also talked about how even Pre-K students get to vote on things in class (ex. choice of a brain break).  We made red and blue stars on white paper with star shaped cookie cutters and red, blue and silver glitter!  The students love glitter!

Tuesday- No School

Wednesday- We learned how to write the letter C which was our letter of the week!  The Uppercase C is one large curve and it is part of the letters O and Q. We worked in our Handwriting without Tears workbooks on the letter C.   We tore black, brown, tan, and green paper to create a camouflage heart that says,  "Veterans are the Heart Of America!"  We worked on a coloring stars by size activity.

Thursday- We used dot markers to make the letter C. We finished our camouflage hearts and started working on our torn paper acorns.  Students worked on counting and tracing numbers in Candy Corn counting 0-10 and Counting Spiders books.  Some students also dot painted Poppies, a flower associated with Veterans Day (and the remembrance of fallen soldiers. Not part of our discussion).

Friday- We painted binoculars in art  with Ms. Tara. We will decorate them by and create neck straps for them next week in art.  We finished our Acorns and cut them out for our fall bulletin board.  At free choice we had a lot of fun being creative with old fashioned colorful sentence strips, making snakes, trains, crowns, and other things our imaginations could thing up.

"Eye"  have no  "eye"-dea... what possessed my Pre-K kiddos to decide to try and scare Ms. D. with spooky eyes!  I guess clean-up time brings out the 'monsters' in everyone...
Plus, these spooky characters love being on camera, and I love taking their pictures!  🤣🤣🤣
