Welcome to Spoede Pre-K. The first 8 weeks of school we have focused on establishing a safe, trusting community, mastering routines and procedures, and developing social-emotional and foundational academic skills. The foundational academic skills included print and book awareness, name recognition, letter recognition, and pre-reading skills, such as listening comprehension and introduction to phonemic awareness through our Heggerty curriculum.
I use coloring pages for morning work because the students can work independently and it is a calming, engaging activity. When Coloring, we are working on fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness, concentration and focus, color and language recognition, and creactivity and self-expression. Using coloring pates for morning work on a proper grip, practice writing our names and help with classroom management by setting a positive tone for the day.
Circle time provide opportunity for oral language growth, where we take turns in conversation, verbally telling experiences, and gaining the confidence to speak in front of the group. We practice our Alphabet Chant "A, Apple, /a/; B, Bike, /b/;...to work on letter/sound connection and letter recognition.
In Math, we have been working on Counting and Cardinality, which include rote counting, practicing one-to-one correspondence, and knowing that the last object you count is how many object are there. Our calendar time helps with rote couting and numeral recognition, one-one-correspondence, sequencing and ordering, and patterning. The patterns come from the calendar cards that represent the days of the week. Playing role the dice and cover games helps students with subitizing, which is instantly knowing how many pips are showing on a dice without having to count them one by one. This skill is the foundation of number sense that connects early counting skills to advanced mental math strategies.
